HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Blackbeard's Castle.

The seventeenth century Danish masonry watchtower, known as Skytsborg, survives essentially intact atop its hill overlooking Charlotte Amalie harbor, along with several later buildings erected around it as part of a former hotel complex. The tower is a National Historic Landmark, and the property has been held by a succession of private and local owners. Access to the grounds has been limited and guided rather than freely open.

About Blackbeard's Castle

Blackbeard's Castle is a stone watchtower, known originally as Skytsborg, built by Danish colonists around 1679 to help defend the harbor of Charlotte Amalie on Saint Thomas. It formed part of the island's early colonial defenses alongside nearby Fort Christian. Its popular association with the pirate Blackbeard is a later legend rather than a documented historical connection.
