The site preserves substantial stretches of Hadrian's Wall curtain, the fort's stone walls, gateways, and granaries, along with a later farmhouse built partly from reused Roman stone. It forms part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site and is managed by English Heritage as a scheduled monument. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis, with surrounding wall sections freely accessible on foot.

About Birdoswald Roman Fort, Cumbria

Birdoswald Fort was built in the second century as one of the auxiliary garrisons along Hadrian's Wall, housing infantry cohorts that patrolled and defended the Roman frontier in northern Britain. Excavations show occupation continuing well after Roman withdrawal, with timber halls raised within the fort into the fifth century. It illustrates the transition to early medieval Britain.
