HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Bingerville Old Colonial Capital & Botanical Garden.

Surviving fabric includes former French colonial administrative buildings and a botanical garden of tropical trees and ornamental plantings, laid out when Bingerville served as the colonial capital of Côte d'Ivoire before the capital moved to Abidjan. The grounds are maintained by Ivorian state and municipal authorities as public parkland. The garden and surrounding colonial buildings remain open to the public.

About Bingerville Old Colonial Capital & Botanical Garden

Bingerville was founded around 1900 as the new capital of French Cote d'Ivoire, replacing Grand-Bassam after a yellow fever epidemic, and was named for colonial governor Louis-Gustave Binger. The colonial administration built government offices, a school, and an experimental botanical garden for tropical agriculture. It served as the colony's capital until 1934.
