About Big Pit National Coal Museum
Big Pit was a working coal mine in Blaenavon, South Wales, sunk in the 1860s and operating continuously from 1880 until 1980. It employed generations of local miners who extracted coal to fuel the ironworks and industry of the South Wales coalfield. The mine formed part of the Blaenavon industrial landscape that fueled the region's iron economy.
