Bibliotheca Alexandrina
Alexandria, Egypt
Alexandria, Egypt
HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
The building is a modern structure completed at the start of the twenty-first century, and its striking discus-shaped reading room and surrounding grounds remain as originally built rather than as a restoration of any ancient predecessor. It is administered by its own governing authority under the Egyptian government as a public library, museum, and cultural complex. The library and its attached museums and galleries are open to the public, with exhibition spaces on a ticketed basis.
About Bibliotheca Alexandrina
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina was built by the Egyptian government with international support and opened in Alexandria in 2002 as a modern successor to the ancient Library of Alexandria. It was designed as a research library and cultural center symbolizing renewed scholarship in the Mediterranean world. Its circular building and museums became a hub for education and exhibitions.
