The site preserves the excavated stone footings and foundations of a medieval town gate, displayed in a sunken enclosure at street level along with interpretive panels, rather than any standing gate structure above ground. It is maintained by Hull City Council as a scheduled monument within the city center. The remains are freely accessible to the public in an open pedestrian precinct.
About Beverley Gate, Kingston upon Hull
Beverley Gate was one of the medieval gates in the walls of Kingston upon Hull, built to control access to the fortified town. In April 1642, its governor, Sir John Hotham, refused King Charles I entry, denying him the town's arsenal. The refusal was among the earliest acts of defiance that helped precipitate the English Civil War.
