HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Betty's Hope Plantation.
The site preserves ruins of the sugar works, including two restored stone windmill towers, one fitted with reconstructed sails and machinery, along with the stone foundations of the boiling house and other estate buildings, while the plantation great house itself no longer stands. It is maintained by the Betty's Hope Trust in cooperation with Antigua and Barbuda's national parks authority. The grounds are freely accessible as ruins in open ground.
About Betty's Hope Plantation
Governor Christopher Keynell established Betty's Hope around 1650 as one of Antigua's first large-scale sugar plantations. The Codrington family acquired and expanded the estate later in the seventeenth century, operating its cane fields and windmills with the forced labor of enslaved Africans. The plantation became a model for sugar production across the British Caribbean.
