The historic center preserves its parish church, the ruins and remnants of the former Franciscan convent, and rows of stone and whitewashed houses along the old street plan of the former Canary Islands capital. The town falls under the heritage protection of the Canary Islands government and Fuerteventura's municipal authorities, with the ensemble designated as a protected historic site. It is freely accessible as a small inhabited town with its church open to visitors and other structures viewed from the street.
About Betancuria Historic Town
Jean de Béthencourt, leading a Norman expedition for the Crown of Castile, founded Betancuria in the early fifteenth century as the first capital of Fuerteventura. Its inland location was chosen partly to reduce the risk of pirate raids, though corsairs still attacked the town repeatedly. Betancuria remained the island's administrative and religious center until the nineteenth century.
