HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Bet Guvrin-Maresha National Park.
The park preserves an extensive network of man-made caves cut into soft chalk, including bell-shaped cisterns and quarries, columbaria used for raising doves, and the painted Sidonian burial caves of ancient Maresha, along with ruins of the Roman-Byzantine city of Eleutheropolis. It is managed by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and forms part of a World Heritage Site. The park is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Bet Guvrin-Maresha National Park
Maresha was founded as a Judahite city by around the ninth century BCE and later became a center of Idumea under Hellenistic rule. Its inhabitants carved extensive underground complexes into the soft chalk bedrock, including columbaria, cisterns, and olive presses. Nearby Beit Guvrin grew as a Roman and Byzantine city, anchoring settlement in the Judean lowlands.
