HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Besalú Medieval Town.

The town preserves its fortified Romanesque bridge, the medieval Jewish quarter with a rare underground mikveh, the Romanesque church of Sant Vicenc, and the ruined monastery of Sant Pere. It is protected as a historic ensemble under Catalan cultural heritage law and is administered by the local municipality. The town is freely accessible as a living settlement, with the mikveh open on a ticketed, guided basis.

About Besalú Medieval Town

Besalú emerged as the seat of an independent county in the ninth century, ruled by its own counts until absorbed into Barcelona's county in the twelfth century. The town flourished as a market center, crossed by a fortified Romanesque bridge over the Fluvia River. It also supported a Jewish community with a ritual bathhouse built in the twelfth century.
