HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Benin City Walls & Oba's Palace.

Only fragmentary earthwork ramparts and ditches of the once extensive Benin City walls survive amid modern urban development, while the Oba's Palace, as it now stands, is a twentieth century reconstruction built after the original was destroyed by fire during the 1897 British punitive expedition. The walls are in state and municipal custody and the palace remains the residence of the Oba of Benin. The wall remnants lie in open ground and the palace is not generally open to the public.

About Benin City Walls & Oba's Palace

The Benin City walls, vast earthworks begun by the Edo people around the ninth century, grew over centuries into one of the largest earthwork systems in the world. At their center stood the Oba's palace, seat of the kingdom of Benin and its renowned bronze-casting guilds. British forces destroyed much of the city in an 1897 punitive expedition.
