HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Benaki Museum.
The museum occupies a restored neoclassical mansion built for the Benakis family in central Athens, with its principal galleries housing the family's original collections of Greek antiquities, Byzantine and Ottoman era art, and decorative arts intact within the building. It is administered by the Benaki Museum, an independent, nonprofit cultural institution founded by Antonis Benakis. The museum is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Benaki Museum
The Benaki Museum was founded in 1930 when collector Antonis Benakis donated his family mansion and art collections to the Greek state. Its holdings ranged from prehistoric and Byzantine Greek artifacts to Islamic and Asian art amassed by the Benakis family. It became one of Greece's premier private museums for the study of Greek material culture.
