About Baylor University State Park
Baylor University was chartered by the Republic of Texas in 1845 and held its first classes at Independence, becoming the oldest university in Texas. It relocated to Waco in 1886, and Baylor and its original trustees' heirs later donated the Independence campus for park use. The site was the founding home of higher education in the Republic.
