About Baylor Massacre Burial Site

The Baylor Massacre Burial Site remembers dragoons killed during a British surprise attack in September 1778. The memorial in River Vale preserves a burial place associated with the encounter. The soldiers' scattered quarters and the later burial site represent different parts of the event.

Bergen County protects the burial and memorial site as a historic place. Research in 1967 recovered evidence associated with burials in former tanning vats, and county acquisition supported preservation. The grounds commemorate the victims but do not encompass all the houses where the attack occurred.

History happened here at Baylor Massacre Burial Site

Before dawn on September 28, 1778, British troops attacked men of George Baylor's Third Continental Light Dragoons while they were quartered in local houses. The sleeping soldiers suffered deaths, wounds, and capture. The encounter became remembered as the Baylor Massacre.

Six men were buried in tanning vats near the Hackensack River, according to the county's interpretation. The burial place was rediscovered in the twentieth century and preserved as a memorial. Its significance lies both in the original violence and in the later recovery of a neglected wartime grave site.
