Near Vercelli, the Roman army under Gaius Marius and Quintus Lutatius Catulus defeated the Cimbri under their king Boiorix at the Battle of Vercellae in 101 BCE. The victory annihilated the Cimbri host, which had invaded northern Italy after migrating from northern Europe. It ended the Cimbrian War and removed a major threat to Rome during the late Republic.
