On June 29, 1776, American vessels protecting the privateer Nancy fought British warships near Turtle Gut Inlet. The Americans removed much of Nancy’s valuable gunpowder before setting the grounded ship ablaze; its remaining powder exploded as British boats approached. The action was an early naval engagement in New Jersey waters and helped preserve supplies needed by the Patriot war effort.

Nancy had sailed from the Caribbean with gunpowder, arms, and other supplies when British cruisers pursued it toward the southern New Jersey coast. American crews from Lexington, Reprisal, and Wasp helped unload the stranded vessel. Captain John Barry directed part of the operation. By sacrificing the ship after saving much of its cargo, the Americans denied both vessel and remaining powder to the enemy. The explosion killed or injured men in approaching British boats and entered local memory as a dramatic example of improvised coastal defense.
