About Battle of Stamford Bridge Site, East Yorkshire
On 25 September 1066, King Harold II of England defeated a Norwegian force under Harald Hardrada and the earl Tostig Godwinson at Stamford Bridge. The battle ended the Norwegian claim to the English throne and cost Harald Hardrada his life. Harold's victory came days before he marched south to face William of Normandy at Hastings.
