The Battle of Lindley's Mill on September 13, 1781, followed Loyalist Colonel David Fanning's audacious capture of Governor Thomas Burke and other North Carolina officials at Hillsborough. Patriot militia under General John Butler intercepted Fanning's column near Cane Creek. A fierce engagement around the mill and ford produced heavy casualties but did not free Burke, whom the Loyalists carried toward Wilmington. Neighbors buried Whigs and Loyalists together in mass graves and cared for wounded men in nearby houses. The burial ground preserves the intimate brutality of a civil war fought among Carolina communities.

On these grounds, Revolutionaries and Loyalists were buried together in mass graves by people of this neighborhood, who also cared for the wounded in their homes. Additional burials are at Spring Meeting House.
