The Battle of Concepcion site occupies open land along the San Antonio River near Mission Nuestra Senora de la Purisima Concepcion de Acuna, one of the Spanish colonial missions south of downtown San Antonio. The land itself served an agricultural and pastoral function tied to the mission complex before and after the battle, part of the mission's historic farmland and grazing areas along the river. On October 28, 1835, during the Siege of Bexar, a Texian force under James Bowie and James Fannin camped near the mission and used the terrain, including a wooded bend of the river with steep banks, defensively when attacked by a larger Mexican force under Domingo de Ugartechea, resulting in a decisive Texian victory achieved with minimal casualties. The site did not function afterward as a fortification or garrison; rather, it reverted to its earlier agricultural and mission-related uses. Today the battlefield grounds are preserved as part of Mission Concepcion and the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, jointly managed with the National Park Service and the Archdiocese of San Antonio, and the mission itself remains an active Catholic parish. Historical markers placed by the Texas Historical Commission and other organizations identify the battle site and interpret its significance, and the surrounding parkland functions today as a historic and recreational green space along the river's mission reach, drawing visitors interested in both the colonial mission and the revolutionary battle fought on its grounds.
