MARKER

VISITOR INFORMATION

The existing Thomas Polk home marker concerns a nearby residence rather than the courthouse battle position. Retain a distinct draft for the battle site. Map point reviewed October 3, 2026: Visitor reference is the photographed state Battle of Charlotte marker on South Tryon near Trade. This nearby marker interprets the fight; it does not establish the demolished courthouse’s exact footprint or replace the separate Thomas Polk home Site. Visitor information reviewed October 3, 2026: View the roadside marker from a safe public sidewalk. The former courthouse does not survive at this visitor reference. Toilets at the marker itself remain unverified; the nearby transit-center option is described below. Parking researched October 3, 2026: Nearby paid Two Wells Fargo Center garage, 301 South Tryon Street, serves a walk to the Trade/Tryon historical marker. Follow posted visitor entrances, rates and space restrictions; the garage is separate from the former courthouse.

Visitor information batch 2 — reviewed October 3, 2026: Nearby public restrooms are documented at Charlotte Transportation Center, at Brevard and East Trade Streets. CATS lists building opening daily 4:50 am–1:30 am, with public restrooms among its amenities. Follow staff instructions and current access rules. These are transit-center facilities reached on foot, not toilets at the historic courthouse marker.

Free exterior historical marker; no separate ticket or staffed hours. View only from authorized public areas and follow any posted property-access rules. Associated buildings, grounds, museums or tours may have separate hours and admission. Use a safe lawful approach; permission to enter the wider historic property is not implied.

Peak visitation season unconfirmed. No reliable site-specific monthly attendance pattern was established.

April-May or October for a public-street historical-context walk in generally milder conditions. Confirm the current marker and any organized tour or museum opening separately.

About Battle of Charlotte Site (Former Courthouse)

The Battle of Charlotte took place around the former county courthouse on September 26, 1780. William R. Davie’s force resisted the advance of Cornwallis’s army into the town. The modern Trade and Tryon area preserves the historical setting through roadside interpretation, although the courthouse used during the action is gone.

A state highway marker near South Tryon and Trade streets provides the mapped visitor reference. The original courthouse no longer survives, and the marker is not a surveyed outline of the building or battlefield.

History happened here at Battle of Charlotte Site (Former Courthouse)

After the British victory at Camden, Cornwallis advanced toward North Carolina. Davie prepared to resist the column at Charlotte, using the courthouse area as a defensive position. On September 26, 1780, American troops fired on the approaching British advance guard before eventually withdrawing in the face of greater strength.

The action delayed the British entry but did not prevent the occupation of Charlotte. Its setting is important: the courthouse and open market area shaped the defenders’ choices within a compact town. Today, historical interpretation helps explain that vanished arrangement amid later development at Trade and Tryon streets.
