HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Battistero Neoniano.
The baptistery preserves its original fifth century octagonal structure and its dome mosaic depicting the baptism of Christ and the apostles, along with marble revetment and stucco decoration on the lower walls. It forms part of the Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna, a World Heritage Site, and is maintained by the Archdiocese of Ravenna-Cervia. It remains consecrated and is open to visitors on a ticketed basis.
About Battistero Neoniano
The Neonian Baptistery was built in Ravenna in the late fourth or early fifth century, adapted from an earlier Roman bath structure for Christian use. It was named for Bishop Neon, who commissioned its mosaic decoration in the fifth century. It served as the baptistery of Ravenna's cathedral, used for baptism by immersion of new converts.
