About Bastille Fort
The Bastille of Grenoble originated as a fortress built on a hill above the city beginning in the late sixteenth century to strengthen French frontier defenses. It was expanded over subsequent centuries, with major fortifications added in the nineteenth century as part of France's border defense network. The stronghold formed part of a wider system guarding the city of Grenoble.
