HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Bassano del Grappa & the Ponte Vecchio.

The covered wooden bridge, known as the Ponte degli Alpini and originally designed by Andrea Palladio in the sixteenth century, has been rebuilt in its historic form several times after flood and war damage, making the present structure a faithful timber reconstruction rather than original fabric. It is maintained by the Comune di Bassano del Grappa, the municipal government. The bridge and town are freely open to the public at all times.

About Bassano del Grappa & the Ponte Vecchio

A bridge spanned the Brenta River at Bassano del Grappa from medieval times, controlling a key river crossing. Architect Andrea Palladio rebuilt it in the sixteenth century as a covered wooden bridge on stone piers, designed to withstand floods. Soldiers and traders crossed it for centuries, and it was rebuilt after destruction in the Second World War.
