HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Basing House, Hampshire.
Only earthworks, excavated foundations, and fragmentary brick and flint walls survive of what was once among the largest private houses in England, largely destroyed by fire after a lengthy Parliamentarian siege during the English Civil War. The site is in the care of Hampshire County Council. The ruins and grounds lie in open parkland and are freely accessible to visitors.
About Basing House, Hampshire
Basing House was built in the 1530s by William Paulet, Marquess of Winchester, as one of the largest private residences in Tudor England, incorporating an earlier Norman motte. It served as an aristocratic seat visited by Tudor monarchs. During the English Civil War it became a fortified Royalist garrison before Parliamentary forces stormed and destroyed it in 1645.
