HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Basilique Saint-Martin de Tours.
The present basilica is a nineteenth and early twentieth century neo-Byzantine building erected over the tomb of Saint Martin, distinct from the medieval basilica that stood nearby and was demolished after the French Revolution, of which only two towers, the Tour Charlemagne and the Tour de l'Horloge, survive separately. It functions as a Catholic church under the Diocese of Tours. It remains an active place of worship that is freely open to visitors.
About Basilique Saint-Martin de Tours
French Catholics built the present Basilique Saint-Martin between 1886 and 1924 over the tomb of Saint Martin of Tours, a fourth century bishop and one of France's most venerated saints. Earlier churches had marked the site for centuries until Revolutionary authorities demolished the medieval basilica in the 1790s. The site remained a major pilgrimage destination.
