About Basilica of Santa Croce

Florence’s Basilica of Santa Croce contains the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei and Niccolò Machiavelli.

Opera di Santa Croce maintains the monumental complex and its works of art. The church has undergone restorations after flood damage and other conservation needs.

History happened here at Basilica of Santa Croce

The present Santa Croce church was begun in 1294 or 1295 on a site used by the Franciscans since the thirteenth century.

Santa Croce became a burial place for Florentine families and, later, a national pantheon. Michelangelo’s tomb dates from the sixteenth century; Galileo’s and Machiavelli’s monumental tombs were erected later than their deaths.
