HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Basilica of Our Lady of Peace.

The basilica survives as built, an intact domed reinforced concrete church loosely modeled on St. Peter's Basilica, with its extensive marble interior, stained glass, and surrounding colonnaded plaza. It belongs to the Roman Catholic Church and holds the formal rank of minor basilica. It remains an active place of worship and is open to visitors, generally by guided tour.

About Basilica of Our Lady of Peace

Ivorian President Félix Houphouët-Boigny commissioned the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in his hometown of Yamoussoukro, completing it in 1989 as a monumental Catholic church modeled on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Pope John Paul II consecrated it in 1990. The basilica reflected his ambition to make Yamoussoukro the nation's political and religious capital.
