The Basilica di Sant'Apollinare in Classe was built in the sixth century as the church of the port town of Classe near Ravenna. It was dedicated to Saint Apollinaris, the first bishop of Ravenna, and constructed under Ostrogothic and early Byzantine rule. It became renowned for its Byzantine mosaics, among the finest examples of early Christian art.
