The sixth-century basilica survives largely intact in its original form, including its celebrated Byzantine mosaics depicting Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora, which remain largely unrestored in composition though conserved over time. It falls under the Catholic Archdiocese of Ravenna and forms part of the World Heritage Site for the Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Basilica di San Vitale
The Basilica di San Vitale was constructed in the sixth century in Ravenna and consecrated in 547 under Bishop Maximian, with funding from the banker Julianus Argentarius. Built as a church combining Roman and Byzantine architectural forms, it was decorated with mosaics portraying the Byzantine emperor Justinian and empress Theodora. The building marked Byzantine influence over Ravenna following Ostrogothic rule.
