HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Barkerville Historic Town.
The site preserves and has restored more than a hundred original and reconstructed nineteenth-century wooden buildings from the Cariboo gold rush era, including stores, a church, and residences, arranged along the town's original streets. It is managed as a provincial historic site by the Barkerville Heritage Trust on behalf of the Government of British Columbia. The town operates as a living history museum open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Barkerville Historic Town
Barkerville grew after 1862 when prospector Billy Barker struck gold on Williams Creek, sparking the Cariboo Gold Rush in the interior of British Columbia. It became one of the largest towns on the Pacific coast north of San Francisco, drawing miners, merchants, and Chinese laborers to its claims. The settlement anchored a gold rush economy central to the colony's development.
