The barrow preserves a complex, multi-chambered Bronze Age cairn with several stone cists and a surrounding wall, though its present form includes significant nineteenth-century reconstruction carried out during antiquarian excavation. It is managed by English Heritage as a scheduled monument. The site stands in open moorland and is freely accessible at all times.
About Ballowall Barrow
Ballowall Barrow is a prehistoric chambered cairn near St Just in Cornwall, built in the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age as a burial monument. Its unusual multi-chambered structure was investigated and partly reconstructed by antiquarian William Copeland Borlase in the 1870s. It reflects the funerary practices of early farming communities in far west Cornwall.
