HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Ballintubber Abbey.

The abbey retains its thirteenth century church, largely restored after centuries of partial ruin following its roofing loss, along with sections of the cloister and monastic buildings founded by Cathal Crobhdearg O'Conor for the Augustinian canons. It functions as an active Roman Catholic parish church under the local diocese. The church and grounds are freely open to visitors and pilgrims.

About Ballintubber Abbey

Cathal Crobderg O'Conor, King of Connacht, founded Ballintubber Abbey in 1216 for canons of the Augustinian order. The abbey endured suppression at the Reformation and destruction under Cromwellian forces, yet Mass was said continuously for centuries. It served as a stop on the pilgrimage route to Croagh Patrick and a center of Augustinian life.
