HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Balagrae (Al-Bayda).

The ancient site preserves scattered ruins associated with ancient Balagrae, including foundation remains near modern Al-Bayda, largely unexcavated or lightly exposed in-ground remnants. It falls under Libyan state antiquities authority protection. Public access is informal and largely unrestricted in open ground.

About Balagrae (Al-Bayda)

Balagrae, near modern Al-Bayda, was a Greek settlement in ancient Cyrenaica founded as part of the colonization from Cyrene. It was known chiefly for its sanctuary of Asclepius, a healing shrine that drew pilgrims from across the region. The town later came under Roman and Byzantine rule as part of the wider Cyrenaican urban network.
