HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Baelo Claudia, Cádiz province.

The site preserves extensive excavated ruins of a Roman coastal town, including the forum, basilica, the Capitolium temples, a theater, city walls, and fish-salting and garum production facilities, all left as consolidated archaeological remains rather than reconstructions. It is managed by the regional government of Andalusia through its archaeological site and museum administration. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Baelo Claudia, Cádiz province

Roman settlers founded Baelo Claudia on the strait of Gibraltar coast in the second century BCE, and Emperor Claudius later granted it municipal status. The town grew wealthy from fish salting and the production of garum, a fermented fish sauce prized throughout the Roman world. Its harbor linked southern Spain with Roman North Africa.
