HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Avdat.
Avdat preserves the ruins of a Nabataean and later Byzantine hilltop town, including a temple platform, two churches, a bathhouse, wine presses cut into rock, and rock hewn burial caves, with portions of the fortifications reconstructed. It forms part of the Incense Route World Heritage Site in the Negev and is managed by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority. The site is a national park open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Avdat
Avdat was founded around the third century BCE as a Nabataean station on the incense trade route across the Negev desert. Under later Roman and Byzantine rule it developed terraced agriculture and became known for wine production. The site reflected the shift from a caravan outpost to a settled agricultural center in the desert.
