HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Avaricum (Bourges).

Little of the ancient Gallic oppidum remains visible above ground, as the site lies beneath the modern city of Bourges, though sections of Gallo-Roman ramparts and artifacts recovered from excavations are held in local collections. The area falls under French state and municipal heritage protection. Public access is limited to viewing scattered archaeological remains and museum collections rather than an intact site.

About Avaricum (Bourges)

The Bituriges tribe built Avaricum as their principal oppidum, a fortified Gallic settlement, before the Roman conquest of Gaul. In 52 BCE Julius Caesar besieged and captured the town during the Gallic Wars, and his troops killed most of its inhabitants. The siege marked a turning point in Vercingetorix's resistance against Rome.
