HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Autun.

The town preserves substantial Gallo-Roman remains, including the gates of Saint-André and d'Arroux, sections of the city wall, the ruined Temple of Janus, and a Roman theater, alongside the Romanesque Cathedral of Saint-Lazare with its carved tympanum. The Roman monuments are classified historic monuments in state or municipal care, while the cathedral remains under the Catholic diocese. The sites are freely accessible in open ground, with the cathedral functioning as an active place of worship.

About Autun

Autun was founded by the Romans as Augustodunum in the late first century BCE to replace the Gallic hillfort of Bibracte. It grew into a major Gallo-Roman city known for its schools of rhetoric and its monumental city gates. As one of the great cities of Roman Gaul, it served as a regional center of administration and education.
