The site preserves the ruins of the Temple of Athena on the acropolis, extensive city walls, a theater, a necropolis, and an Ottoman era mosque and bridge in the village below. About Assos (Behramkale)

Assos was founded by Aeolian Greek colonists, traditionally from Lesbos, around the seventh century BCE on the northwestern coast of Anatolia. In the fourth century BCE the philosopher Aristotle lived and taught there under the patronage of the ruler Hermias, founding a school of philosophy. The city later flourished under Hellenistic and Roman rule as a fortified port.
