About Arnold’s Tavern Site and Marker (Morristown)

Arnold’s Tavern served as George Washington’s headquarters during the Continental Army’s first Morristown encampment, from January to May 1777. Its former location overlooks the Morristown Green. A marker recalls the lost building and the leadership, supply, and medical decisions made during a difficult period of the war.

The original tavern was relocated in the nineteenth century and later destroyed by fire. Interpretation on North Park Place commemorates its headquarters role. Nearby surviving buildings are related historic properties, not Washington's original 1777 headquarters.

History happened here at Arnold’s Tavern Site and Marker (Morristown)

Following the winter campaign in New Jersey, Washington established headquarters at Arnold’s Tavern in January 1777. Morristown offered a setting for directing the army while troops and support activities occupied the surrounding community. From the tavern, Washington corresponded about reinforcements, supplies, and the pressures threatening the army’s ability to continue.

Illness, desertion, and shortages shaped the encampment alongside military planning. The army’s smallpox inoculation program belonged to this period, with local buildings serving wartime needs. Washington remained at the tavern until May. The headquarters is distinct from Ford Mansion, used during the later Morristown encampment of 1779–1780.
