The National Park Service preserves an archaeological and commemorative landscape rather than an intact colonial fort. Trails, earthworks, reconstructed features, museum exhibits, and waysides interpret successive settlements, while river erosion and channel changes have removed or submerged portions of the historic site.

This site preserves the location of Arkansas's only Revolutionary War engagement, an April 17, 1783 attack by British-allied forces on the Spanish garrison at Fort Carlos III, which was successfully defended by Spanish and Quapaw allies.
