HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Arkadi Monastery.

Arkadi Monastery preserves its Venetian-influenced church facade, surrounding monastic cells and refectory, and the vaulted room where a gunpowder explosion took place during the nineteenth century, along with an ossuary holding the remains of those killed. It remains an active monastery under the Orthodox Church of Crete. The complex is open to the public, including a small museum, generally on a ticketed or donation basis.

About Arkadi Monastery

Arkadi Monastery was an Orthodox monastery on Crete, with its present church built during the period of Venetian rule. It served the local Christian community under later Ottoman rule as a center of worship and refuge. In 1866 it became a symbol of Cretan resistance when defenders and refugees died in an explosion during an Ottoman siege.
