About Arcot Fort Siege Site (1780)

Arcot Fort was captured by Hyder Ali's forces in 1780 during the Second Anglo-Mysore War. The event belongs to a later conflict than Robert Clive's famous defense of Arcot in 1751. The fort's history connects changing regional powers with the wider struggle involving Britain and France.

Delhi Gate survives as a historic reference at Arcot. The entry does not establish which fort fabric relates to the 1780 siege, how later alterations affected it, or who is responsible for its conservation; those distinctions need research.

History happened here at Arcot Fort Siege Site (1780)

Arcot had already acquired strategic importance in earlier eighteenth-century wars. In 1780, Hyder Ali's campaign brought the town and fort under attack as Mysore challenged British power in the Carnatic. The fort fell during that campaign, adding to British military difficulties.

The capture formed part of a regional war that overlapped with the American Revolution and Anglo-French conflict overseas. Arcot's long military history can obscure the distinctions between successive campaigns. Dating the surviving gate and mapping the former defenses would help interpret the 1780 siege on its own terms.
