HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Archivo General de Simancas.
The Archivo General de Simancas occupies a former medieval castle whose walls and towers were adapted for archival use, with the building's fortified structure substantially preserved beneath later modifications. It is administered by Spain's Ministry of Culture as the national repository for historic administrative records. Public access is limited, generally by appointment for researchers rather than general visitors.
About Archivo General de Simancas
Charles the Fifth ordered a royal archive established in Simancas Castle in the sixteenth century, and Philip the Second expanded it into the central repository for records of the Spanish crown. It preserved administrative, legal, and diplomatic documents from across the Habsburg empire. It became one of Europe's earliest state archives and a model for later ones.
