HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Arbor Low, Derbyshire.
The site preserves a Neolithic henge bank and ditch enclosing a circle of roughly fifty limestone slabs, all now recumbent rather than standing, together with a later Bronze Age round barrow built into the earthwork. It is a scheduled monument in the care of English Heritage, on land that remains a working farm. Access is on foot across pasture from a nearby parking area, and the site is freely open to visitors.
About Arbor Low, Derbyshire
Arbor Low was a Neolithic henge monument built around 2500 BCE, consisting of a circular bank and ditch enclosing around fifty recumbent limestone slabs. Its stones, which fell rather than remaining upright, gave rise to its popular description as the Stonehenge of the North. It formed part of a wider ceremonial landscape alongside the Gib Hill burial mound.
