HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Ara Pacis Augustae, Rome.

The Ara Pacis Augustae survives as a substantially original marble altar, reassembled from fragments recovered over centuries and set in its present form near the Mausoleum of Augustus, now enclosed within a modern glass and travertine pavilion rather than displayed at its original location. The monument and its enclosing museum are managed by the municipal government of Rome through its cultural heritage administration. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis as a dedicated museum.

About Ara Pacis Augustae, Rome

The Ara Pacis Augustae, the Altar of Augustan Peace, was commissioned by the Roman Senate in 13 BCE and dedicated in 9 BCE to celebrate the peace following Augustus's campaigns in Gaul and Spain. Its marble reliefs depicted the imperial family, mythological scenes, and ceremonial processions in a classical style. The monument became a defining work of Augustan state art.
