About Aquae Sextiae (Aix-en-Provence), France

Aquae Sextiae was founded in 123 BCE by the Roman general Gaius Sextius Calvinus as a military post, taking its name from its thermal springs. It became the first Roman town established in Gaul, later serving as an administrative center of Roman Provence. Nearby, Roman forces under Gaius Marius defeated the Teutones in a battle in 102 BCE.
