HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Apollonia, Albania.

Apollonia preserves ruins of its ancient Greek and Roman city, including the Bouleuterion facade known as the Monument of Agonothetes, sections of the theater, and stretches of the city walls, together with the later Byzantine Monastery of Saint Mary on the site. It is administered as an archaeological park by the Albanian Institute of Archaeology, and the monastery houses an archaeological museum. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Apollonia, Albania

Apollonia was founded around 588 BCE by settlers from Corinth and Corcyra as a Greek colony on the Illyrian coast. It grew into a prosperous city with a renowned school of philosophy, where the future emperor Augustus studied as a young man. It later served as a key point along the Via Egnatia linking Rome to its eastern provinces.
