HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso.
The former Jesuit college retains its colonial stone facade, arcaded courtyards, staircases, and chapel, along with extensive early twentieth century mural cycles painted on its walls by leading Mexican muralists. It is operated as a cultural and exhibition center under Mexican federal and university administration. The building is open to the public on a ticketed basis for exhibitions and guided visits.
About Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso
The Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso was founded in 1588 by the Society of Jesus as a Jesuit college in Mexico City. After the Jesuits' expulsion in 1767, the building later housed Mexico's National Preparatory School. In the early twentieth century its walls became a founding site of the Mexican muralist movement, with murals by Diego Rivera.
