Anne Hathaway's Cottage is a timber-framed, thatched farmhouse that retains much of its original structure alongside later additions and restorations, set within period gardens and an orchard. It is owned and managed by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust as part of its group of Shakespeare family properties. The cottage and grounds are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Stratford-upon-Avon
The Hathaway family, prosperous yeoman farmers, built this thatched timber-framed farmhouse in Shottery in the fifteenth century. Anne Hathaway grew up there before her marriage to William Shakespeare in 1582. The cottage remained a working farmhouse for generations of the Hathaway family and became associated with Shakespeare's early life and courtship.
