HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Andre's Capture Monument.
A granite memorial stands near the location where American militiamen captured British Major John André in Tarrytown. The landscaped roadside site contains the nineteenth-century monument, inscriptions, commemorative sculpture, and interpretive surroundings rather than a surviving Revolutionary-period structure or substantially preserved battlefield.
About Andre's Capture Monument
Near this site on September 23, 1780, American militiamen John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart, and David Williams captured British Major John André. Papers hidden in André’s clothing exposed Benedict Arnold’s plan to surrender West Point to the British. Arnold escaped, but André was convicted as a spy and executed. The capture saved the strategically vital Hudson River fortress and prevented one of the Revolution’s most dangerous acts of treason.

André is typically remembered favorably by historians as a man of honor, and several prominent U.S. leaders of the time, including Alexander Hamilton and the Marquis de Lafayette, did not agree with his fate.
