About Andre's Capture Monument
Near this site on September 23, 1780, American militiamen John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart, and David Williams captured British Major John André. Papers hidden in André’s clothing exposed Benedict Arnold’s plan to surrender West Point to the British. Arnold escaped, but André was convicted as a spy and executed. The capture saved the strategically vital Hudson River fortress and prevented one of the Revolution’s most dangerous acts of treason.
Andre's capture is commemorated by a stone monument in Patriots Park. Bill Coughlin's June 2008 photograph records bronze plaques unveiled in 1980 that reproduce an 1853 dedication inscription. The later plaques and stone monument are distinct layers of commemoration. Their current conservation and the master street address need confirmation.
